Opportunities From: Maryland Park Service

Park staff tackle a variety of projects throughout the year, but there are plenty more that could benefit from your unique skills and interests. Whether you have an idea for an improvement in the park, or want to apply your knowledge with certain tools and equipment, there are many possibilities for volunteers in this category. Volunteers will work both with staff and independently, and will have the opportunity to be self directed on projects to their level of experience. Sandy Point is home to several well loved trails both inside the main park area, and in our outlying parks. Volunteers will work on maintaining trails around the park at their level of experience. Volunteer tasks may include removing debris, pruning vegetation, and communicating any notes to the volunteer coordinator.

Join us in our ongoing effort to pick up litter at Sandy Point! As one of Maryland's busiest state parks, Sandy Point staff holds back a tide of trash left by park visitors & washed in from the Chesapeake Bay. We welcome individuals and groups of all kinds to assist us in protecting our natural resources and creating an inviting recreational space for all.

Lead engaging and educational programs for park visitors of all ages. Use your expertise, interests, and love of parks to plan and lead a program for visitors with the help of staff. Examples of programs include guided hikes, arts and crafts, and demonstrations of recreational activities (e.g. fishing). Nature center programs are essential to helping visitors connect to nature and history in the park. Volunteers may be tasked with setting up before an event, assisting during an event, and/or participating in post event activities. Can your language skills create a safer and more enjoyable experience for park visitors? Join the Sandy Point team and provide crucial multilingual outreach for our diverse visitors. Topics may include park rules and regulations, boating and swimming safety, leave no trace, and more! Sandy Point has a large Spanish-speaking visitor population, but we would be happy to hear your ideas for outreach in other languages too. Volunteers will identify and remove invasive plants from within the park's property to prevent them from spreading and to promote healthy growth for Maryland native flora. Their job will include identifying and removing invasive plants, recording data, and communicating any problems to the volunteer coordinator.

If you are interested in being a state park volunteer, but are unable to commit to the any of the current opportunities or can't find an opportunity the meets your interests, you can still sign up and register. Doing so will ensure that the Volunteer Coordinator is aware of your interest and will contact you to explore future possibilities.
