A Camp Host is an inviting person that provides a friendly presence for park staff and visitors. Here at Rocky Gap State Park, Camp Hosts are vital when it comes to meeting the expectations of our visitors. In exchange for a free campsite, Camp Hosts are obligated to volunteer at least 20 hours per week in the park, mostly in their assigned camping loop. The typical responsibility of a Camp Host is to take care of their assigned loop which entails cleaning the bathhouse daily, keeping the loop and all of the campsites tidy, greeting visitors, assisting visitors with information about the park, reminding campers of park policies when needed, and generally being a friendly, helpful liaison between visitors and park staff.

Rocky Gap State Park offers excellent volunteer opportunities for youth groups (ages vary depending on projects when accompanied by a guardian), including trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, beach clean up and minor park maintenance. These projects often qualify for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.

Like to get your hands dirty? Want to look back at the end of the day with a feeling of accomplishment? Volunteer to do trail work and/or maintenance in our park. This may consist of clearing trails after storms (or during the winter off-season), collecting trash and debris, building water bars, repairing trails damaged by storms or usage, and otherwise helping to keep our network of trails in tip-top shape. A strong back, and the ability to work outside in all weather on potentially rugged terrain, is a must. Familiarity with hand and/or power tools, and/or some experience with trail work, are a bonus but not required. Wear weather-appropriate clothing that can get dirty/muddy and sturdy work or hiking boots; bring water bottle, work gloves, lunch, as well as sunscreen, bug repellent and rain protection as needed. This is an occasional opportunity and days and times will vary. 

If you love to garden, or do not have your own garden to cultivate, join us for this Earth-friendly project. The native garden next to the nature center was created by Caroline County school students. The garden helps maintain the natural plant habitat of the park as well as teach us about invasive species. By yourself, with a friend or a group, spend some time between April and September weeding, pruning, watering, planting, mulching and expanding the garden. It is a great way to get in touch with the park’s beauty and enjoy the outdoors with family and friends.

Like working with your hands and fixing things? If so our maintenance team could always use an extra set of hands to help! Tasks could include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, routed sign creation, and more...

Interested in helping maintain Susquehanna State Park's trails, but don't have a specific one you'd like to "Adopt" through Adopt-A-Trail? Then this opportunity is right for you! Whether you'd prefer to work solo or in a group, there are plenty of opportunities to help out on our trails while also getting out in nature! 

Clean up of Clopper lake once a month on the first Wednesday of every month at 5pm. You will be able to take out a kayak or walk the lake shore trail for trash removal. This will happen through October. Thank you! 

This will happen on the second Wednesday of every month through October. Hike a trail of your choosing with a group or by yourself. Report any issues with trail, remove debris, cut back invasives with loppers. Any help is appreciated! 

Like working closely with animals? Fascinated by reptiles and birds of prey? Then volunteering to assist with our Scales and Tales program might be just the opportunity you were looking for! You will assist in the care -- mostly feeding and cleaning the aviary -- of our non-releasable raptors and reptiles, and may earn the privilege of helping with health checks and programs. Requirements include love of working with animals and comfort in working with them, calm and patient personality, willingness to get dirty and messy as part of the job, and understanding of the importance of keeping our animals healthy, clean and comfortable. Must be at least 16 years old and able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. occasionally or with help. Volunteers must be willing to work outside in all weather. Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty (closed shoes or boots only); sanitary gloves and other needed equipment will be provided. This is an ongoing opportunity. Volunteers must be willing to commit to regular days and times. Training is offered 1-2 times per year.

Volunteer Rangers at Patapsco Valley State Park assist regular park staff with operations, public service, and resource protection. After completing an initial 40 hours of service, and various trainings, volunteers receive uniforms and an orientation. Special sub-groups include the Volunteer Bike Patrol and Volunteer Mounted Patrol.

Choose this opportunity if you are interested in becoming a regular volunteer. This volunteer group meets every other Wednesday at the Nature Center and does trail maintenance and other park maintenance activities.

Help park staff by operating the Nature Center and giving educational programs.

Camp Hosts play an important role in the operations of the park and are the front-line ambassadors for our guests. Janes Island State Park Camp Hosts are required to perform a minimum of 20 hours per week per registered host. Hosts are provided with a campsite that includes a 30 amp electric hookup.  Sites do not have water or sewer hookups.  Regular tasks include, but are not limited to: Welcoming new campers, keeping the campsites clean, keeping the campground in good condition, answering questions asked by campers, letting the campers know what is happening in the park/area over the period of their stay.

Sandy Point is home to several well loved trails both inside the main park area, and in our outlying parks. Volunteers will work on maintaining trails around the park at their level of experience. As one of Maryland's busiest state parks, Sandy Point staff holds back a tide of trash left by park visitors & washed in from the Chesapeake Bay. Lead engaging and educational programs for park visitors of all ages. Use your expertise, interests, and love of parks to plan and lead a program for visitors with the help of staff. Their job will include identifying and removing invasive plants, recording data, and communicating any problems to the volunteer coordinator.

You'll greet new arrivals sharing the park's rules and regulations, provide information and field questions regarding the park's amenities, and promote park events and activities providing directions within the park and to attractions in the surrounding area. Other responsibilities include monitoring the campground bathrooms for cleanliness and supplies and cleaning the campsites which include raking the pads, cleaning up trash, cleaning the cabins and emptying the grills/fire rings. The ability to interact with the public and staff in a cordial and tactful manner is required. A criminal background check will be conducted and a driver's license valid in the state of Maryland is required. Interested persons are encouraged to apply as the number of positions is limited.

Staff at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area perform daily trail maintenance work throughout the peak spring, summer, and fall seasons. With over 80 miles of trails we offer volunteer opportunities to help maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for park visitors.

Our most popular volunteer event, the Second Saturday Trail Party, gives you the power to help transform and restore your favorite trails. You may even find a special place to take a break for your next day hike! Volunteers at these events have helped install reverse grades, build bridges, improve water crossings, improve drainage, and clear trails.

Attendees should expect to work in most weather conditions, and bring suitable personal protective equipment (PPE). Work gloves, closed toed shoes (safety toe recommended), and long sleeves and pants are a must. Additional safety equipment is provided as needed, or communicated ahead of the day.

Come help build something you can use again and again!

We meet every second Saturday between April and October at the Fair Hill NRMA maintenance complex located at 300 Tawes Drive in Elkton at 8:45 AM. Events usually run for 3 hours. Water is provided on site, water bottles are recommended for refilling.

Tuesday Crew is a Maintenance Volunteer is an individual that would like to assist our Rangers and Maintenance employees with keeping the park beautiful and running smoothly here at Rocky Gap State Park. This opportunity is available for anyone that has spare time on Tuesdays and would like to help or learn new skills. Key duties would be maintaining the park by keeping it clean, building picnic tables, painting, operable, safe, and user friendly. Come join us with this amazing opportunity.

A Trail Volunteer is an individual that enjoys hiking or biking trails and wants to maintain them for others to enjoy. With nearly 19 million park visitors in Maryland State Parks every year we are asking you to help keep trails accessible, safe and enjoyable. Rocky Gap State Park has roughly 24 miles of trails to maintain with a variety of terrain and views. From virtually flat trails to cliffs overlooking the Rocky Gap Gorge , the trails offer something different for all hikers and bikers. So come join the dedicated staff and volunteers and learn a unique skill set while promoting safety and stewardship.

Our Trail Captain Program, in collaboration with park management, assigns captains to specific areas of the park. These captains organize work events, perform maintenance, and serve as the eyes and ears of our trail system. When you see volunteers clearing fallen trees, rest assured they have completed chainsaw certification, and first aid training, coordinate each workday with park management, and follow strict safety protocols to keep the trails safe and accessible for everyone.

Each Trail Captain receives training from the Maryland Park Service, and most are certified to operate chainsaws within the park. Captains report issues to Friends, and we handle coordination and permissions with park management. Our Trail Captains work in teams, align their efforts with park staff, and report back to Friends to ensure seamless communication and effective maintenance. This is where you will report hours for any invasive plant removal inside the park, working independently. This is also where you will enter any hours for Adopt A Garden opportunities. This can be volunteering to weed in a garden, or adopt a garden where you would come by weekly, or bi-monthly to weed and tend to an agreed garden area at Patapsco.

The typical responsibility of a Camp Host is to take care of their assigned loop which entails cleaning the bathhouse daily, keeping the loop and all of the campsites tidy, greeting visitors, assisting visitors with information about the park, reminding campers of park policies when needed, and generally being a friendly, helpful liaison between visitors and park staff, All Camp Host Campsites have electric, water and sewer hook-ups and are located close to the bathhouse. Camp Hosts are required to host for a minimum term of 1 month and must be available to fulfill their duties. A Special Events Volunteer is an individual that likes to help out in anyway they can. Camp Hosting requires 20 volunteer hours a week. They receive a free full hook up camp site during their stay. Camp Hosts are required to clean campsites, keep the campground in good condition, answer questions about the campground and the park, assist with cleaning the day use area and assist with special events. Minimum stay of one to two months is preferred. 

Welcome Master Naturalists! Once you have completed your Master Naturalist course, you will volunteer for the park in a variety of ways. Please use this opportunity to log your volunteer hours.

The Turkey Point Lighthouse Volunteer is an opportunity for an individual that enjoys history and the beautiful scenery the historic Turkey Point Lighthouse has to offer. Since 1833 this lighthouse has been safeguarding locals and visitors to the area pointing them to safer waters. For generations this lighthouse has been a part of history, linking people from all walks of life. Turkey Point Lighthouse holds stories from recreation to unbelievable challenges to tragedy. Now you have the opportunity to be a part of history. Come join us and support park visitors by volunteering with Turkey Point Light Station Inc. This opportunity involves providing tours, greeting visitors, assisting with minor upkeep and providing visitors with a chance to enjoy the incredible beauty this lighthouse has to offer. 

A Beach and Litter Clean-Up Volunteer is an individual that wants to honor the Maryland Park Service's Trash Free Parks Policy and keep the park clean and void of trash. Although Maryland State Parks are beautiful, it is a big responsibility to make sure they stay clean and natural. Elk Neck State Park is a peninsula, surrounded by the Elk River and the Chesapeake Bay. Marine debris washes up on the shorelines, causing a hazard for visitors and wildlife. Throughout the year the park works with the local community, organizations, school groups, scouts, businesses and other individuals to schedule clean ups. All you need to bring is yourself. A Nature Center Volunteer is an individual that enjoys nature and wants to educate others about the outdoors. It is often that a Nature Center Volunteer has an excitement and a love for the outdoors with good communication skills. The Nature Center at Elk Neck State Park offers regularly scheduled programming for park visitors during the busy season. During that time volunteers would greet visitors, offer information about the park, assist with programs, hikes, groundskeeping and upkeep. A Trail Volunteer is an individual that enjoys hiking or biking trails and wants to maintain them for others to enjoy. With nearly 19 million park visitors in Maryland State Parks every year we are asking you to help keep trails accessible, safe and enjoyable. Elk Neck State Park has roughly 12 miles of trails to maintain with a variety of terrain and views. From virtually flat trails to cliffs overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, the trails offer something different for all hikers and bikers. So come join the dedicated staff and volunteers and learn a unique skill set while promoting safety and stewardship. A Volunteer Ranger is an individual above the age of 18 that wants to serve the public and the beautiful state of Maryland. A Volunteer Ranger focuses on honoring the Maryland Park Service Mission Statement to manage the natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources to provide for wise stewardship and enjoyment by people. The responsibilities of a Volunteer Ranger are to assist park staff in keeping the park clean, operable, safe and user friendly. Once joining the Volunteer Ranger Program at Elk Neck State Park, the volunteer will be trained on park specific operating procedures. This will include patrolling, providing information to visitors, assisting with hikes or programs, reminding visitors of park policies, cleaning bathhouses, general maintenance, etc. Once 40 hours of volunteer service is completed, uniforms and additional trainings will be offered. These trainings could include an annual volunteer training, customer service, voluntary compliance, Basic First Aid/CPR, Basic Chainsaw, Leave No Trace, interpretation, search and rescue, and other amazing opportunities. The large native plant garden by the main parking lot needs regular care and maintenance. Assist staff in maintaining this garden by:

Removing tree saplings

Dead heading in the spring

Thinning aggressive plants to promote floral diversity

Encourage pollinator and wildlife habitat

To assist in keeping Assateague State Park safe and beautiful for its visitors, many volunteers contribute to the maintenance of the island and mainland resources. Project needs include native plant landscaping at the park’s various garden plots and pollinator meadows, assistance with grounds-keeping, building maintenance, and dune maintenance.

We also work with local community school groups, scouts, and other volunteers to aid us in keeping our park and the beach clean and beautiful. Although our state parks follow a trash free policy, often our visitors do not. We welcome groups interested in doing a good deed to help our environmental efforts for a beach or marsh clean-up. The park will provide free trash bags to volunteers who should bring along work gloves, sunscreen, bug spray and appropriate clothing and shoes.

Assateague Island is home to many wild horses, many of which spend their summer months in the island’s developed areas such as the park campground. Horse Management Volunteers help educate the park’s daily visitors and campers on how to practice safe actions while safely viewing the wild horses. They educate visitors on safe food storage practices, how to keep a safe distance, what to do if a horse approaches you, and wild horse behavior. Horse management volunteers are trained by park staff on how to move people and horses away from dangerous situations. Horse management volunteers must be of-age to drive and have a valid driver’s license with less than 6 points on their driving record.

Become a Volunteer Ranger and help protect Maryland's natural resources at beautiful Assateague State Park. The Volunteer Ranger Program is for people ages 18 and above who want to assist the park’s full-time staff with operations, programs and public service. Volunteers are trained and provided with uniforms for their jobs once they have completed 40 hours of volunteer service at the state park. A statewide orientation training helps volunteer rangers become familiar with the state park operations. Additional training opportunities, that may include CPR, first aid, search and rescue, and trail stewardship, may be offered on a regional basis.

The Camp Host program invites volunteers to experience camping in a whole new way while serving in beautiful Maryland State Parks. A Camp Host volunteer receives free camping in exchange for working to clean and maintain their assigned camping loop, bathhouse, beach and trails daily. Our hosts are an integral part of the park team, acting as a contact point with campers in the campground and while staffing our camper contact station. These dedicated volunteers are often found walking through their camping loops greeting visitors, answering questions, and reminding campers of park policies including safety around the island’s wild horses.

Hosts must provide a minimum of 28 hours of volunteer service per week. Hosting opportunities are offered from May through October for one-month assignments. Host campsites are equipped with 30-amp electric hookups; no water or sewer hookups are available. Additional volunteer opportunities are available to hosts who show interest in helping in other aspects of park operations, such as maintenance, environmental education programs, or special event assistance.

Assateague State Park offers environmental education programs year-round, with most programming happening from April through September. We offer a wide range of programs to school groups, youth groups, and all park visitors, as well as special events and community outreach programs. Volunteer activities include conducting recreation-based programming, feeding and care of education animals, facilitating scheduled environmental education programs to school and youth groups, and staffing our Nature Center and Nature Nook. Our environmental education volunteers invigorate the programs with excitement, knowledge, and enthusiasm for the outdoors.

In addition to local volunteers, Assateague State Park offers an on-site EE volunteer option. Volunteers who are out-of-state can apply to be an on-site volunteer to receive a campsite for a maximum of 6 weeks while they volunteer. The campsite has a 30-amp electric hookup, no sewer or water hookups available. On-site EE volunteers can apply for one of three different volunteer sessions. The spring session runs from late April through mid-June, summer session 1 runs from mid-June through July 31, and summer session 2 runs from August 1 through the weekend after Labor Day.
