South Mountain Recreation Area

Who We Are

South Mountain State Park is a 40-mile long multi-use state park weaving along the South Mountain ridge from the Pennsylvania line to the Potomac River. Part of the Blue Ridge Mountain Range, South Mountain separates the Hagerstown and Cumberland valleys from the Piedmont regions of Maryland and Pennsylvania. South Mountain State Park is an abundance of geologic, natural, cultural, and historic experiences. Visitors can walk in the footsteps of the Civil War Soldiers who fought at the 1862 Battle of South Mountain, climb to breathtaking views, and experience the solitude of nature.

Located in the Appalachian Mountains, Greenbrier State Park is a multi-use park providing many kinds of recreation. The 42-acre man-made freshwater lake and white sandy beach draw many visitors who enjoy swimming, canoeing, boating and fishing. A visitor center is open year-round and features information on the South Mountain Recreation Area and a small gift shop.

What We Do

The mission of the Maryland Park Service is to manage the natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources to provide for wise stewardship and enjoyment by people. The Maryland Park Service's volunteer programs provide many ways for park-goers to be involved in supporting and maintaining public lands for all to enjoy. The work that volunteers do in our parks is very important! Interested in volunteering in state parks? Please explore what options may be available near you!
